I have no problem with it what Mrs. Schmidt is saying.
I would be the very person that she describes in her clip. Like some other students that criticize their professors, I would feel that they were trying to torture me. The older I’ve gotten, the more I realize that people like Mrs. Schmidt WAS trying to help me. I have recently visited another college that I’m interested in going to. I’ve learned something about this college. There is no half-stepping in that school.
From what she says , she just only want her students to be prepared for college and for the real world. If we want to get what we want out of the professor, such as the easy way out, then we aren’t learning our material. They may not see it at this time because they see her as a monster, but at the end, they will realize the service that she is doing to them. I’ve been there.
You are right on the money. We teach or EDUCATE and students follow
Educate come from a Latin word to lead and student is Latin and it means to obey. We are here to help. This is one Great professor.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
If you are a student and you can not take it. Take some time off why should we dumb down for you. NO ONE DID IT FOR US!!!!!!
I like “hard” professor, and especially strict ones, cuz it makes you feel like a nerd and you know you’re improving on something and putting yourself at a higher standard. They usually know more too and wants to help you =)
She seems like one of those teachers who’s hard on you, but you appreciate it later. She seems like she gives a lot and expects a lot in return. What’s wrong with that?
So many students haven’t experienced a reality check yet. When they do, they will come running to teachers like Professor Schmidt. I did. Luckily, I experienced it before I returned to school while I was in the Marines. Maybe a draft would create more diligent students, haha.
For the absent minded, hopefully someone mentions the need to silence phones before class starts. Aside from that, all professors should prevent interuptions during lectures. Students don’t need the distractions from ringing, vibrating, or beeping phones. If you want to text of listen to your phone make noise, stay home and call yourself!
I don’t know this professor but kudos to her re the cell phone issue. They’re terribly disruptive to those students that care about what the professor has to say and want to learn something. If a person needs to be on the phone, they shouldn’t be in a class cheating others out of an education!
OMG…The horrible editing to this video…Who did they get to do it?? READ the comments RMP.com! Please…we hate the constant rockin intro…Anyway, that said…
I avoid teachers like her, because I believe a teacher can still be a great instructor without having to be strict like she is. I’ve had plenty of teachers that have influenced my mind with their teaching not lack thereof. Oh, and I still pull out my cellphones in class…I have a 3.5 GPA
What is wrong with having your cell phone out in class. Do you forget, WE pay for these classes…this is not free. Why do we have an attendence policy, the STUDENTS pay for these classes…these crazy rules teachers have need to go.
Anthony Palmerston:
Your tuition money allows you the opportunity to learn, not the opportunity to display or use your cell phone in class. Moreover, attendance policies, while apparently useless, insures that students actually go to class and not simply pay for a grade. In other words, colleges and universities often institute attendance policies to avoid the appearance of being a diploma mill.
As long as you're going to have your cell phone on (texting), you might as well talk during class, eat, drink, wet your nappies, and wank while you're at it. Make believe that class is your dorm room. Better yet, stay in your dorm room and don't go to class. You pay for it.
Oh, and "What is wrong with having your cell phone out in class" is that, if you do try to multi-task, you never learn to punctuate properly.
In my classes, I never take attendance. I tell my students straight up that attending is a choice, but that you'll do better and learn more if you come. That said, while I'll tolerate a bit of discreet (quiet) talking amongst students (I can make believe that they're actually talking about the course material!), too much talking and any texting or cell phone use is not allowed. I always remind students to turn off their mobile phones, but am regularly interrupted by them. I'll do a little dance when I'm in a good mood, otherwise I tend to glower at the student. They are usually pretty embarassed and it rarely happens again.
Chatting or texting with friends is really a sign of disrespect for the OTHER STUDENTS. Go to your class, pay attention and you'll probably learn something. Otherwise, go hang out in the Caf with your friends.
In the good ol' disrespectful US of A, where we do whatever the heck we want to our friends and neighbors, students show no concern for instructors or classmates. Texting is such a problem that most need to be tasered in order to stop those thumbs from dancing.
Ah, yes, the "glower." I remember those from parochial school in the 50s. Most students south of the 49th parallel have become impervious to the glower.
Just because you pay for something doesn't mean you can throw etiquette out the window. Remember, you're not the only student paying tuition to attend classes. It would be nice if the ignorant minority would show a little consideration for the students hoping to learn something.
On a related note, one of my professors would actually answer any phones that rang in class. This proved to be a bit of a time waster at first, but when people began realizing he wasn't joking, the ringers were silenced. It was also pretty entertaining, especially when he took a call from some ditz's beautician and rescheduled her bikini wax for her.
I agree with you Mr. Palmerston, that's the reason why I really don't care whether students come to class or not. I do not uphold the attendance policy at my school because it has come back to bite me in the ass.
I don't even give a **** about cell phones. Heck, I keep mine on, and never on vibrate.
It's years of constant whining of students that's led me to not care. It's easier that way, BELIEVE ME!
ok…i like having my cell phone out in class, but i also understand where the teachers r coming from…i believe that it is important 2 show up 4 class, pay attention, and take notes…i think teachers should allow students 2 txt as long as r phones r on vibrate, and as long as they can get all the notes…i don't think vibrate's a big deal…one of my teacher's said if she ever heard a phone ringing, she would answer it, but it never happened in that class
just use discretion when your using your phone in class. i may look at mine occasionally if there is something semi-important going on in my life, but last night downtown is usually not that important as to where i need to disrespectful to someone who is doing their job, and very well may be trying to better my(our) future(s). well, actually sometimes last night is pretty funny/awesome but i at least turn the thing to silent and don't blatantly text in front of the teacher. and lord knows i turn the KEYPAD SOUNDS OFF!!! someone texting with a beep for every push is almost as annoying as this stupid guitar crap that interupts every 8 seconds of these videos…. PLEASE CHANGE THIS RATEMYPROFESSOR STAFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to prove the point once, I had someone call me while I was teaching class every 10 minutes or so. After the 3rd call interrupting class, the students got the point. My rule of thumb — if a human is in front of you, talk to them. They trump the phone or the text because they were there first. The whole wide world existed and did just fine without everyone being at the beck and call of their telephones. Really, discovered electricity and everything! Went to the moon!
well we cant be prepared if the teachers doesnt know how to convey their lectures. They have to make easy to understand the material not put a problem up there and expect to already know the answers. There are some good teachers out there, but there are horrible ones too.

She has a great attitude, and hopefully is the cause of people dropping out.
This is college, come to class prepared, pay attention, and learn how to think!
