I like him. Cocky yet funny… kind of like House. But, in Rhode Island.
October 27th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
haha Rhode Island House…. nice.
This is pretty intense crit for an intro course though. Alot of people would probably be in it that would never take another biocourse again. Lighten up a bit.

Pfftt I hate teachers that only teach to show their "superior intellect." If you are making people hate the subject you teach because you're a jerk, then you're failing as a teacher.

AWESOME. I hate science and I'd take his class just for the fun of it. He's hilarious! I love that people complain he's "tough" and yet he allows cheat sheets and make-up exams whenever you want, any format?! Wish MY professors were that easy! What a bunch of whiners. lol

This feature badly needs to be redone. Every 2-second sound bite from the professor is bookended by 5 seconds of annoying guitar music. I feel like I've wasted my time.

Needs a Hair–Piece!

what a bunch of cry babies, wish he was my professor. way to fire back at these cry babies

Any Professor who turns legions of students off the subject they are teaching, is the worst kind of teacher. They should find another profession. Most of these egg heads wouldn't last a day in the real world
November 21st, 2009 at 6:06 am
i agree with Teresa up there- a buncha babies… the more i look at this site the more i realize that too many kids just expect everything handed to them.i can't even believe this prof. responded to "don't miss an exam"- i mean no sh*t, how do you just miss an exam? well, actually i know how it happens, but if your even given the chance to make it up you should be grateful- especially if you can use a cheat sheet!
November 26th, 2009 at 12:06 am
I see the kissa$$es are on the board.
Going for extra credit crymeariver, Teresa?
I agree that many kids lack the self discipline to handle college, though, but what’s your invested interst in brown-nosing some prof who wouldn’t give a sh*t if you got run over by a cement truck?

This guy seems really cool, I don't get it.:P
December 7th, 2009 at 5:18 am
It seems like he would enjoy working in a medium security prison. Ha!

Teachers are there to teach…to get students interested, involved and passionate about what they are studying. If he is there strictly to "weed" out the average students then he is doing a miserable job. Introductory courses are often challenging as it is new topics for many students, but to hear a prof pretty much say "get over it" is astounding. Wake up, smell the roses and get people interested in the subject. We need more biologists in the working world.

Whoever thought it would be a good idea to interrupt these videos every 10 seconds with horrible corporate death metal needs to be promptly fired. You guys didn't even shove an ad in there to make a buck! It's nothing but a noisy logo. Hell, those ridiculous breaks are longer than the professor interview itself. Have you guys ever watched television? Youtube? Give us a few watchable seconds of content.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Most people who rate professors on this site are too stupid to be in a University in the first place anyway.
December 23rd, 2009 at 11:10 pm
College students are a bunch of babies. It is a professor's job to challenge you to think for yourself, not to put on a show to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. You are on the road to a career, and your professors are trying to push you to improve. If you're that easily turned off by a tough professor, then obviously it is not the right major for you.
December 24th, 2009 at 1:55 am
Not all students are whiners. But whiners spread their bad attitudes like the flu. Some upright students catch the bug. It's obviously easier to blame others for one's feeling insecure than blaming one's self. Students should know that every adult human being finds him- or herself in challenging and uncomfortable situations at times and has to deal with it. (Did you humanities professors ever try to do your own tax returns, e.g.?) I would say that if students are repeatedly turned off by tough professors, then they should step down to a lower-level college. Community colleges serve a very worthwhile purpose for many.

Just because they got As doesn't mean they didn't think it was hard.

Going back to school again at 33 makes you see things from a whole new prospective. I love to learn, and want to be well rounded on as many subjects that affect my life as possible. Most, but certainly not all of the young students in my classes, care little to learn and expect their instructor's to spoon feed them, and still complain! At the same time there are far too many people who choose careers that they are not gifted in, such as teaching. Unfortunately for everyone, there aren't alot of good teachers out there. More pathetically, these people tell themselves that they are good at what they do. Let other's tell you how good you are. You'll know you're good when enough of the people that experience you first hand as a teacher, tell you themselves. If enough people criticize you or your character, it's time to take a good look at yourself, and CHANGE! I always look at every bad situation, and try to figure what part or role I played in it. People are not introspective enough, always looking to blame someone else, it's no wonder so many are miserable while making everyone else miserable around them. It sounds to me like this teacher Frank Heppner gave his students plenty of mercy. He doesn't sound rigid, so what the heck, do you want him to take the test for you. Too many lazy people in this world, is it really a mystery that there are so many customer svc. issues w/ companies! I think the only thing this professor needs to work on, possibly, is his cocky attitude, other than that, treat others w/ respect, move on, and don't expect anything back.

Dude I had him… Trust me HE SUCKS!
January 20th, 2010 at 11:07 pm
PS… Exams are only 29 questions long. That wouldnt be bad if they werent on 400 pages of material. You also need to read the questions he gives to understand how difficult he actuelly is. Half of the are worded in ways to trick the students. Out of my class of 300 the Average was around a 50. Obvesouly he isnt doing something right when all of the BIO 101 classes with different professors have normal averages. Don't get me wrong he is funny and his lectures are interesting but he doesnt teach whats on the exams. He pretty much says this exam is from chapter 1 to 36 have fun studying. If you miss something and its on the exam your screwed. PS:: Although you get cheat sheets you barely use them
January 31st, 2010 at 1:27 am
…Wow… The guy is an ass. I enjoyed bio, thank goodness he isn't at my school.

Unless you have taken his classes, it's difficult to judge what he is like yourself. He does seem to help out a lot (cheat sheet, etc.) but is that help actually helpful in the course. I love to learn myself, but there are some teachers that burn everyone. Not saying he is, but I don't think you have enough experience unless you took his course.

I think students pay so much for classes and while they should be challenged, I have had teachers that just really suck. I'm an A student and have had teachers take off points for things they were wrong about. I've even had teachers say things that were horribly outdated and wrogn. And then there are the teachers who never took the intercultural communication classes which would show them how many students are taught to learn in different ways to sticking to one method as if that method were life itself is stupid. If your students are having a hard time it might be your fault and I think more instructors need to try to find the best ways to bring the material to their students and help them understand. I can buy a book on nuclear physics and read it, test myself on it, take quizes and complete assignments for a fraction of the cost of a college. It's the professors' job to do more than be a text book, they are there to help students understand the material presented.
March 3rd, 2010 at 7:51 pm
That's right. Get a book on nuclear physics, complete the assignments yourself, and then go to Iran and help them build their bomb. Please. Whatever you do, please don't stay here and work with nuclear energy. Pretty please.
