Students are the ones that pay so students are the customers. The professors who are teaching should strive to do a good job. Students have no responsibility to attend the class. If they pay for the class and not show up, they are losing money and that is their problem. It is not up to the professor to decide whether they come to class or not.

He says that he has bias to certain things and that you should read the book. So he is intentally teaching us wrong material! what if we just skipped over that part in the book "accidentally." Than he deducts points from us even though we are writing what he had taught us.

To be honest I dont always want to go to class. Sometimes im just to tired to function properly, but because my grade counts on it I have to attend them even though its really killing me physically, mentally, and schoolastically So thanks guys for making that attendance so important that i cant even get proper sleep to do the work you assign. Being that he is bias and we need to read the book anyway, we dont even need him, because all of what he is saying isnt going to hold true for the test so in reality he is hurting us and just waisting are time.

He forgot the fact that we are paying him to teach. So being that we are paying him for a service shouldn't he fully deliver on said service? Those who force attendance usually stink at teaching, those who dont, usually focus on the actual teaching. Its funny because I noticed all my attendence craving Professors all demand stuff but wont lift a arm to help, yet the ones who say its not important usualy will go all out to help you understand the material.

He is not paying me to learn, Is he?

If your paying someone to do something, In the real world you do the job regardless of said costumer being there or not. They all act as if they are teaching us for free and we are blessed to be taught by them.

Even if my statments dont hold true to you, they do for me. That is what I have expierenced in the past and you cant change that.

As a nontraditional student also with many responsibilities, I am still amazed that people still don't understand that education is the most selfish thing you can do. BUT, it is the best thing you can do for YOURSELF. If you choose not to show up for class, you are the one losing out. Higher education teaches you so much more than just the skills and knowledge to have a career. No matter how young or old you are, if you really give it all you've got you will learn something new about yourself as a person every day. Sure there are bad professors, but there are a lot more bad students that just don't realize what they are passing up by not being in class. I may miss class at times but in the long run I know what I am missing out on – even with the bad professors! Wake up people and get all you can out of college, even classes you are taking because you have to, you will honestly be surprised what you learn in the end.

Take a look at Online if you want a totally unregulated system. You can't even be sure the person online is the one taking the class. I often wonder if I had a deadbeat son or daughter if I would be tempted to complete an online degree for them. Maybe! Online needs to be policed. At least we know in a regular class who are students are. If they are an undergrad who was born in 1990 and a sixty year old mom or dad showed up to take the class I would know. How many online classes can make that claim. Attendance is subject to someone (maybe not the actually student) doing online assignments or participating in an online discussion. Weak way to offer an education.

I know that salaries are not very good for K – 12 but College Instructors make very good money. I teach part-time (I am too old, as ageism does exist in the academic world, to get a full-time position. I went back to college to get my graduate degree in my 50s. But I make more working part-time around 9 months a year than I did in my regular career. I teach much more than a full-time Instructor and average 9 classes total at different colleges which equals 27 hours of pay. The lowest pay I receive from one college is 60.00 an hour and the highest is around 72.00 an hour. I work three long days a week and enjoy summers and winter breaks. But you can do the math and see it is a great job which pays well. So if this is what the college pay part-time Instructors who get no benefits you can imagine what kind of salaries and benefits a full-time Instructor gets. Full-time Instructors teach an average of 5 – 6 classes a week but then have other duties. But the profession pays well and actually makes a difference in student's lives.

Dr. Dustin. Here are my questions for you: 1) Do students get to ask questions during the lecture? 2) Are the lectures re-recorded every semester?

If each semester's lectures are posted de novo, then there must be new information presented during the lectures and/or the professor is tailoring the lecture in reaction to subtle (or not-so-subtle) reactions of the students. For example, a quizzical look might get further elucidation at some point.

Did you ever hear a pre-fab, one-size-fits-all lecture? Not particularly educational, IMO.

Listening to a lecture is different than participating in anatomy lab. At my medical school we have all of our lectures recorded and students elect to watch them on their computer from the safety of their own home.
The usmle, or pencil and paper test, is not a cake walk. There are also different "steps" where you are not taking just a regular multiple choice exam. There are clinical aspects.

Many of the students posting here subscribe to the common fallacy that students are the customers of public universities. This is not true. Society is the customer, students (or rather graduates) are the *product*. Good universities turn out good product. No institution can ensure a good product by only utilizing scores on paper exams. Depth of knowledge is only gained through active engagement by participation in learning activities. Some students may be able to achieve reasonable exam scores through self-study but lack true understanding of the material. It is perfectly reasonable for professors to use attendance/participation to reflect this in students' grades as they are making themselves an inferior product of the system and should be designated as such. Yes, bad professors and bad classes lead to bad product as well, that's why you should select your institution carefully. However, once you are in the system, it is your responsibility to make as good a product of yourself as possible so that society reaps the maximum gain from its investment in you. If you choose not to do that please make room for someone more motivated that realizes that knowledge is more complex than what can be demonstrated by filling in the correct circles on a m/c exam.

I suppose the notion of skipping class because you "pay" for your tuition would be akin to this, Would you feel comfortable if medical school didn't require students to attend class? Is it really ok if all they have to do is past a pencil and paper test? No clinical work on cadavers? There is no way anyone would accept that. In business school for instance, everything is group work. You work on group projects in class and out of class. You have to be there, it is part of the curriculum. For those of you who argue this nonsense about not having to attend class it reminds me of a famous educational quote, "Education is the one thing people are willing to pay for and not get."

The argument that you "PAY" for college and therefore should be able to skip class if you want is simply not true. Most students attend school with some assistance from Federal Loans and Grants. This is not your money, it is tax payers money. Furthermore, tuition accounts for nearly nothing of a University's operating costs. The overwhelming majority of university operating expenses are paid through endowments (such as an endowed chair which is simply a position paid for by investments by the university) and for public institutions, tax funds. So no matter what the case, public or private, even if you pay your tuition in full without any assistance you still don't come remotely close to putting a dent in what it would cost if schools endowments and tax funds didn't pay for operating costs. Schools endowments pay for the primary part of what it costs to run the university, not your tuition. So you need to come off that argument because it is weak.

I think students pay so much for classes and while they should be challenged, I have had teachers that just really suck. I'm an A student and have had teachers take off points for things they were wrong about. I've even had teachers say things that were horribly outdated and wrogn. And then there are the teachers who never took the intercultural communication classes which would show them how many students are taught to learn in different ways to sticking to one method as if that method were life itself is stupid. If your students are having a hard time it might be your fault and I think more instructors need to try to find the best ways to bring the material to their students and help them understand. I can buy a book on nuclear physics and read it, test myself on it, take quizes and complete assignments for a fraction of the cost of a college. It's the professors' job to do more than be a text book, they are there to help students understand the material presented.

Professors treat you no differently from the way your supervisor or boss will ultimately treat you: Here's what I want from you. Please do it. If you don't, you're fired (F). Do it well and here's your bonus/promotion (A+). The boss needs you to answer the phone at 9:00 when the business day begins. That means you get to work at 8:45 and are ready when the second hand sweeps across the 12. Don't think that because your class begins at 9:00, the teacher has to be in the room at 8:45 (she works there), but since you're a "paying customer," so you can arrive anytime after 9:00. School is not Wal*mart. If you think of school as Wal*mart, at least imagine that we have a limited supply of 54" HDTVs for $100.00. Then you'll set up a tent at the door the night before.

I include material on my tests that could only come from class lectures. It's "unfair" because the student has to be perceptive, put the info in his notes, and/or rely on an amazing memory. All the textbook learnin' ain't gonna help you. But the students need to show up to every class on time.

I've seen faculty and committee decisions overturned at the presidential or chancellor level. I've seen trustees axe presidents. It's the law of the jungle. Majority doesn't rule. Alright, here is my soapbox moment.

Students who persistently and wantonly skip class because they merely want to, under the guise of paying for their classes are not only doing themselves and fellow classmates an injustice, but the entire academic institution. Think about this: you receive your degree in, let’s say, psychology, from a distinguished institution; you decide that you are now going to go for your MA and Ph.D. however, while getting your BA the three classes you chose to slack in are now being built further upon. What do you do?

A teacher’s responsibility is not just to stand there and talk. It is to educate, inform, advise, and engage; it is to teach you to think critically and to analyze. This is a major dichotomy in education in balancing the responsibility of the instructor and the student. In a collegr setting, the student bears much greater responsibility, and rightfully so. This is why there is an admissions process, to the best extent possible, to filter out th9se students who have less than favorable likelihood of success. Students today often forget, in their fallacious entitlement though processes, that postsecondary education is a right; it is NOT. Postsecondary education is a revocable privilege. Just like driving a car is, if you break the rules of the road, your driving PRIVILEGE may be revoked, so it should be in a college education: break the rules of the class or school and have the privilege of higher learning revoked.

I would not want someone performing a service for me, be it medical, technical, financial, etc., who could not be responsible enough in getting the best service of their education as that will show me that for them, “acceptable” is mediocrity.

I took three Classes with Professor Mark Bambach.
Mark cares about his students, makes each classes fun and interesting.
He always brings his personal business knowledge to the class. Gives you great insights how the business world runs and how you should conduct yourself when confronted with real situations. Gives plenty time for assignments, helps you thru it, but has no tolerance for excuses. You do the work he will commend you for it. Always available to listen and help you, from critique your resume to give a recommendation.
